How it all began...
The Fulton Hogan Basketball League was established in 2006 as part of the Nelson Basketball Association (NBA). All players are affiliated NBA members aged from 12 years. Established primarily, but not exclusively for players with supported learning needs. The success of the league is very evident with its growth over the last seventeen years. A combination of the players ability and the league providing an opportunity to compete, has resulted in success all round, from both the players and their supporters perspectives. For many players this has been their first opportunity and experience of playing a team sport. Players also have the opportunity to become volunteers by becoming coaches & referees at the League. The league also offers a pathway onto other leagues as players' confidence and skills increase.
Players countdown to Sunday games and the Stadium is abuzz with colourful uniforms and exciting competition. Cheerful, noisy spectators come along to watch this valuable community event and great sport being played. An annual highlight is league teams playing a half time game at the Nelson Giants NBL game, watched by over a thousand people. The league is very much part of the community with players and volunteers getting together and participating in other community events. For example at an annual Beach Clean-up, Nelson Cancer Society's Relay for Life and on Daffodil Day.
In 2011 we became a Registered Charitable Trust to provide increased opportunities in sport:
With the success of the senior Basketball League a Junior Jammers group was set up in 2011 for children 5-12 years old. The junior group provides fun, skills, team development, and a pathway into the Senior League and /or other leagues.
We also hold a weekly Multi Sports Session for students transitioning from College and school leavers. The sessions offer a different sport every Tuesday afternoon, including netball, hockey, zumba, basketball, fishing, and football. We also value having students studying teaching, health, and sports attend the weekly sessions. Sessions provide a great opportunity for socialising and improving fitness in a positive and supportive environment.
Active8Kids is another weekly Programme for children 5 -12 years. With a focus on fun games the sessions help develop a range of sports skills and confidence.
We also work collaboratively with other community organisations for example Parent to Parent, the Child Development Centre at Nelson Hospital and SENCO’s through Ministry of Education.
We hope other areas in New Zealand will adopt our Trusts key value ‘’that all members have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers; to enjoy playing sport at their ability level; to be welcome and to have the opportunity to participate in a team sport, as rightful members of the community.’’
